What Is Maathr?
‘Maathr’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘mother’. A popular Vedic hymn from the Taittiriya Upanishad, “मातृ देवो भव”, relegates mothers as divine in their being. Yet, in a country whose culture and traditions affords a reverent stature to mothers, little is currently being done to better the lived experiences of mothers.
Motherhood is a journey that is fraught with as many challenges and obstacles as it is sowed with feelings of joy and purpose. We hope to shed light on how the journey of motherhood bears an impact on women's mental health, and devise ways to overcome its obstacles while optimizing joys.
Our Vision
We, at Maathr, aim to increase awareness and action about maternal mental health, while taking steps to holistically help mothers across India.
Though we, as a community, are starting to actively engage in conversations about mental health, there is an evident dearth with respect to both literature and initiatives that cater to mothers in specific. While mothers are revered and recognized as “primary caregivers”, it’s high time we recognize them as individuals who require an equal amount of care and opportunity. We aim to bridge that gap through this initiative, through increased conversation and action.
Our Mission
Maathr aims to use a multi-pronged approach to the issue of maternal mental health.
We believe that the only way to give maternal mental health the importance it deserves is to simultaneously engage in conversation, action, and advocacy.
